Pierre de Fermat was a French mathematician, lawyer, and polymath who made significant contributions to various fields, including mathematics, optics, and probability. He is best known for his Fermat's principle for light propagation and his Fermat's Last Theorem in number theory. Fermat studied law at the University of Orléans and later became a councillor at the Parlement of Toulouse. His work was influenced by the works of Diophantus, a Greek mathematician. Fermat was a skilled Latinist and Hellenist, and his work on optics was influenced by the works of Galileo Galilei and Johannes Kepler. Fermat was married to Louise de Long and had several children, including Samuel de Fermat.
